Fighting for District 1.Moving Jacksonville Forward.

Demetris Harrison, candidate for Jacksonville City Council District 1

Housing and Tenants' Rights

Tenants are struggling to keep up with rising rent costs, while corporate landlords continue to neglect their basic needs. Meanwhile, neighborhoods are becoming unrecognizable as homeowners are priced out by private equity.

  • We are suffering a 47,000-unit affordable housing shortage. We cannot simply "build our way out" of this crisis.
  • I will work with fellow council members to cut subsidies for big developers, instead focusing tax dollars on preserving our City's historic duplexes and small multifamily properties–truly affordable housing.
  • I will work to strengthen the capacity of our Municipal Code Compliance Division (MCCD) to hold landlords accountable for the conditions of their properties.

Public Safety

Public Safety

Public Safety

As a former US Navy law enforcement officer, I know the importance of discipline and the rule of law. As a father, I also believe we have a duty to provide safe opportunities for our children, teens, and families to grow and play.

  • Vacant properties and poor infrastructure allow drug use and petty crime to fester near our schools and homes.
  • Poor sidewalks and outdated roads make our community difficult for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists to navigate safely.
  • I will work with JSO to prioritize the hot spots where drug use and criminal activity are concentrated.
  • I will work to modernize our transportation infrastructure, making Arlington safer for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
Infrastructure & Parks

Infrastructure & Parks

Infrastructure & Parks

While many urban areas of Jacksonville are enjoying renewed public investment, Arlington is losing the beauty and functionality that once made it so desirable. As a result, businesses and jobs have moved out, leaving vacant properties behind.

  • I will fight to secure equitable investment in District 1, laying a foundation for businesses and families to thrive.
  • I will work to ensure our parks are kept in safe, enjoyable conditions, and work with the Parks Department to explore opportunities for new sites.
  • I will work with the Public Works Department to eradicate blight and expand green spaces.
Economic Growth

Economic Growth

Economic Growth

Once a thriving community in Jacksonville, Arlington has experienced steady economic decline for decades. Much of District 1 is considered a "food desert", making groceries and healthy options inaccessible for many.

  • I will always prioritize local businesses and restaurants over large corporate interests.
  • I will work to connect struggling local businesses, restaurants, and stores with available government resources.
Fair Development

Fair Development

Fair Development

Duval is growing. The decisions we make now will shape how our community looks for the next several decades.

  • I will respect the dignity and aesthetic of all neighborhoods in Jacksonville–not selling them out to the highest bidders.
  • I will ensure our tax dollars stay in our community, not subsidizing multi-million dollar developments across the bridge.
  • No AI data centers in Duval County. Period.
Homelessness & Community Resources

Homelessness & Community Resources

Everyone in Jacksonville deserves a safe, stable place to call home. Homelessness is not solved by demonizing and arresting those working to escape its grip.

  • I will invest in TRULY affordable housing, supportive services, and pathways to stability while treating people experiencing homelessness with dignity.
  • I will work to expand our City's safety nets—catching and lifting up our most vulnerable neighbors before they fall into homelessness.
  • I will ensure we provide the dedicated organizations and caregivers on the ground with the resources they need.

Why I'm Running

I’m a Navy veteran, a public servant, a resident of Arlington, and a father and grandfather who believes leadership should be measured by results, not rhetoric.

I moved to Jacksonville in 1994 while serving in the Navy — and I never left. This community became my home. I raised my family here, and I care deeply about the everyday needs of the people who make up District 1. I know what it's like to stretch a paycheck while my neighborhood gets passed over. Arlington deserves a council member who understands the issues that our residents are going through. We deserve a council member who shows up, speaks plainly, and fights for working families on housing, safety, and the basics we've been promised for years. That's the difference I will bring.

Service

Demetris served in the U.S. Navy as a law enforcement officer—experience he brings directly to the public safety challenges facing District 1.

Values

Hard work. Straight talk. Showing up. A working-class candidate who answers to residents — not the establishment, not developers.

A Family of Service

Service runs in the Harrison family. Demetris followed his father and uncles into uniform — a tradition of showing up for country and community that he carries into public service today.
